Great joy can be found in helping someone live life to its fullest; for as long as life lasts.

Sadness is always present in hospice care.  However it is not the only factor. Wisdom, reflecting positively on life's accomplishments, and happiness can be present as well.  As a volunteer, there is love, humor and honor to be found in serving clients at the end of life.  Hospice volunteers do not provide medicine or physical care as to the physicians, nurses and aides.  They can ease suffering by just being present, holding a hand and listening to the clients story.

Become a Volunteer

Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan takes great care in assuring every person is prepared and confident in their role as a volunteer.

There are several requirements we ask every potential volunteer to consider.

  • Many volunteers are drawn to this work after experiencing the positive power of hospice care during the passing of a loved one.  This personal connection leads to very effective volunteers.   We require that you allow one year between the death and your becoming a volunteer.

  • You will be required to complete a lengthy process of training and background checks.  Hospice volunteers must be considered full members of the staff.  This requires volunteers to agree to participate in a criminal history check based on fingerprints and driving record checks.  In addition, there are paperwork requirements, TB tests and mandatory training topics.

  • New volunteers are asked to make a one year commitment to the work.

  • Volunteers are required to use email and to have computer access in order to complete on-line training requirements.
