This interactive meeting will be a great time to strengthen the understanding of the work that social workers do and for social workers to better understand the work that volunteers do with their clients.

Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer's Care

This workshop will provide important insights into the world our clients, guests, and their caregivers navigate as they live their lives with Alzheimer’s disease.

The Best Friends™ Approach to Alzheimer’s Care is a person-centered and compassionate model of care grounded in the understanding that relationships are important in dementia care and that what a person with dementia needs most is a “Best Friend”; a care provider who remains dedicated to helping the person feel safe, secure and valued. The key components of the Best Friends™ Approach include Empathy, The Life Story, Effective Communication, Meaningful Activities, Recasting Relationships, and Developing Knack.   During the program, we will take these components and put them into practice by developing strategies to approach the challenges of dementia care.

First Year Volunteers

Volunteers who began work with HCSWMI after July 1, 2017, are invited to this meeting. We hope to learn from your experience in order to address ways we could improve training and onboarding.  This is a very important topic for the Volunteer Department, and we hope you'll write this date and time on your calendar.

(We've scheduled this over lunch and before the Best Friends Training hopeful that you'll plan to attend both.)

Journeys A Pathway to Healing Training

Grief is especially difficult for children.  A child may not demonstrate their grief in ways that adults readily recognize.  When a child mourns in silence they may well be grieving alone.
Journeys is a program of Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan which offers a safe environment for young people and their parents to share the challenges associated with losing someone they love.  The program is free and open to all.

Volunteers, who want to help grieving children, are needed to facilitate the peer support groups and to serve as greeters and helpers on the nights families gather.

Journeys volunteers must first complete the HCSWMI Volunteer training (see calendar).   The Journeys program staff then offer this program specific training to introduce the skills needed to facilitate peer support groups with children and adults.

If you are interested in joining the agency as a volunteer apply today.  Contact the volunteer department at 269-345-0273 or at volunteer.mail@hospiceswmi.org for more information
